Non toxic gun cleaners?

M Pro 7 claims to be non toxic but does anyone have any first hand accounts to support this? Any other quality non toxic cleaners out there?

MPro7 has a great reputation "out there" for cleaning weapons without smelly solvents & such. About the only other thing that comes to mind as a possible alternative is a cleaner like Simple Green.

I had heard that urine is an acceptable bore cleaner as a battlefield expedient. Hey, it is sterile as long as you don't have a kidney infection, and as long as it's your own, not too gross. Not difficult to obtain, either.

Dirt cheap, too!

Legends of the old mountain men say they used to do this with their Hawken boom-sticks, if they were low on water...

+1 MPro7...I use it, I like it.

Not a bore cleaner.

Urine was sometimes used by machine gunners during WWI when they ran out of fresh water, the water jacketted Vickers .303 guns for example could use it as coolant.

I shoot rifle competitions where accuracy has to be at levels far above what any stock rifle will shoot. It's well known in all precision shooting disciplines that copper plating the bore is the real enemy. Most of the things that you are talking about attack powder fouling not copper. Almost all copper removing agents contain ammonia and cannot be left in the bore and are toxic to boot. Common ammoniated cleaners are Sweets, Barnes, Butches, Montana, and a bunch of others. Smell it, there will be no mistake. You will know if your bore is copper fouled because your patches will come out bright blue. If you have a factory rifle and you have never copper cleaned, your bore is badly fouled.

For the past several years, a large percentage of the competition world has gone to Bore Tech Eliminator. Below is pasted from the Midway site but I can attest that it gets copper out faster and with less mess that anything else I've used.

One of the fastest, easiest and safest ways to clean a gun, Bore Tech Eliminator will eliminate the need for other special cleaners on the bench. Works for rimfire, centerfire and shotgun barrels, this cleaner works in a two step process, the first one changes the electric configuration of the copper and the second step acts as a magnet to remove virtually all copper and prevents it from rebedding into the barrel. Non-toxic, non-flammable chemical is petroleum and ammonia free.

That works..

Not sure if this fits in this thread but J-B bore cleaner
sure helps to get a bore clean and polish it to.

Just a thought..

That's good stuff too, I'll use it every 100 rounds or so. If you have a really fouled barrel, run a couple of wet patches followed by the J&B and wet patch every several minutes until the blue goes away. I'll usually bore brush before the J&B.

It's an abrasive paste used on a tight fitting patch. You'll "short stroke" it down the barrel. The abrasive is harder than the copper and power fouling but nowhere near as hard at the barrel metal.

I used too but got too smart to strap into a shooting jacket and lay out prone in the sun during 100 degree summer days. :confused_ma:

I think F Class is more civilized, at least you can ditch the jacket. I also shoot some 1000 yard stuff and benchrest on occasion.

I figured you knew how to clean since you knew about J&B, that for anyone reading this who didn't.

:111:

Tom
you left out freezing body parts in winter
etc etc.
Been thinking F Class myself, Have a M1A1 Super Match
double lug that I have shot Palma with, Been trying
to figure out how much of a sin it would be
to put a scope on.
Summer days and "old bones in training" it is getting
harder to do the course

Re: Non toxic gun cleaners?

M1A's and scopes go together like fish and bicycles. I know people do it. Matter of fact, if I can figure out where to dig it out, I've got a B-Square M1A mount I'll give you for postage. I had a standard M1A and hung a Springfield scope on it.

Where I shoot, the F Class rifles tend to be custom bolt guns. I shoot a 6 BR bolt gun built on a Panda action with a Nightforce scope. It would be tough to keep up with that with an auto loader.

I'll look now to see if I can find the mount, will PM you if I find it, it's been 5 years or so since I remember seeing it.

Re: Non toxic gun cleaners?

You are right.
Don't know why I call the gun M1A1
do that a lot.
Sure , would like to try the mount
I have had it said that the M1A won't shoot
worth a tinkers dam off a rest,
Only used rests when working up loads
And agree bolts are the way to go for
F-Class,
and the 6BR is a great round, My dad was into
bench rest and that one was his favorite round.
Thanks
